This is a rare occurrence of one of the rare hand-built Deluxe TODPs, specially built for studio use, being sent to me to sell on.
This is a hand-built Deluxe (studio) prototype pedal, built using a vero / perf board #14 of 18. Only 7 of these were made, and had to be fully hand-wired, they were built with the same care and attention used to make the Brelliott hand-wired amplifiers. To order one of these from new, you would be looking at between £500 and £550, depending on the artwork.
This one comes with some provenance: It is an undecorated version which I made for friend, while I was going through the hand-built prototyping phase. He is a sound FX designer for film trailers. He’s designed the Sound FX for quite a lot of recent film releases. The reason he is selling is that he’s decided to travel a lot more, so has got rid of his larger workstation, and all his hardware, in favour of software (which I think he’ll eventually regret).
He works under the name of James Brandon Green, as part of Hivemind Sound, and it was used it in, amongst others, this film trailer:
…for “several of the hits and punch SFX, and the trailer rise sounds that play a few times”
It’s in pretty much perfect condition, with hand crafted strip board and point to point rotary 3-click-per-decade switches all over the place – I surprised myself with how well it was built! I’ve been inside and measured the anode voltage, and its at the upper end (6.8V), and perfectly stable. I’m loathed to mod it in any way, because anything I do will spoil the near perfect wiring.
As this is a used studio / collector item, we are prepared to ship this one worldwide, including the UK and Europe.
And now the usual:
The TODP (Tube Overdrive Distortion Plus) is a veritable toolkit of overdrive and distortion, which can give you a huge range of breakup from a soft tube clip, to full-on metal or punk distortion, with all kinds or blues and rock options in the middle.
For the Studio Deluxe version, there are rotaries for pre-cut and post-boost options for the low end, which can be used together to give a more mid oriented break up in the tube. This one also has a hi cut rotary in the pre- position. The post- high end can be tamed with passive Filter control pot. The recovery gain is controlled with a pot on this version.
All 6 settings utilise the tube device, as with the standard PCB version, with increasingly more noticeable tube effect, as you go from germanium to ABN:
- 3x “hard clipping” diode distortion settings: 70s / germanium, 80s / silicon and 90s / LED
- 3x tube (valve) overdrive settings: AB2 – where you can hear the 2x silicon diodes affect the break up, AB4 – where the 4x silicon diodes are largely inaudible, or ABN – where the compression is controlled in a classic 50s / 60s way
This particular pedal has no graphics, and the legend is drawn on by hand and varnished by myself.
The Soviet era thermionic valve / tube and germanium diodes in the TODP have not been RoHS tested and certified, and hence it does not meet EU RoHS 1. This does not fall under the scope within the relevant act in New York State, and is not a covered item (mainly computer monitors) in California, and hence should be allowed. If you are unsure about whether this allowed in your country or state, please contact us before ordering, as we will not be held responsible for compliance once the pedal has been dispatched.
